In Haiti, Harvest for Humanity recognized a need to improve the diet of the children in our children’s home. A shortage of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as a shortage of protein rich animals such as chickens and goats has inspired us to undertake the development of several farming operations in the uplands of Fermathe.
With the help of manpower from several local families and volunteers from Canada and the US, we have levelled enough land to begin the development of an orchard and vegetable garden for our children’s farm. This will do more than supplement the diet of the children; it will provide them with an environment that will help them to develop skills and work ethics as they help to care for it. Any excess harvest will provide an income for the home and provide fresh fruits and vegetables to the local community.
We built a brand new facility that is approximately 6,000 sqft. to house our hydroponic greenhouse that grows romaine lettuce. It is equipped with 3 ponds that have energy efficient water recirculation pumps, 2 large ventilation fans per pond to draw air out of the greenhouse and a generator to power the entire system. The lettuce will be used for meals at our Children’s Home and the excess will be sold through a distributor to provide another income for the home.
